Ten Things I Am Learning About Dubai

  1. ;It's expensive. Rent is crazy (40% of your pay!), but there are always bed-spaces.
  2. If you don't drive, you're dead meat.
  3. 6 gallons of petrol will pay for one hour of belly dance lessons.
  4. If you're a woman, don't kiss or grope other women in public. (Note to self) Don't kiss or grope anything at all.
  5. Flickr, Twitter, Skype, StumbleUpon are inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political and moral values of the UAE thus they are all banned, though there are... ways.
  6. From the above we can extrapolate. The Internet - Photo Sharing - Cheap/Almost Free Phone Calls - Telling People What You Are Having for Lunch - Stumbling Upon New Things = religious, cultural, political and moral values = Death. International companies in the free zones + their VPNs = Life.
  7. You can buy anything and have it delivered to you in one hour. I bet Indians run it.
  8. The book, Dubai Red Tape Explorer, is your Bible.
  9. They serve Ice Kachang at the Grand Hyatt.
  10. That rumour about a Malay woman selling nasi lemak had better be true, because I'll be wanting it.
